A UNIQUE DINING TABLE

FROM THE 'ENIGNUM' COLLECTION

by Joseph Walsh

Olive Ash Finished with White Oil

Length 360 cm (141.75 in)

Joseph Walsh is inspired by the effects of elemental forces on the land where he was born and now works on the southern coast of Ireland.

The Enignum series began in 2008 and grew from a desire to create an uninterrupted fluid sculpted form, but it was when Joseph returned to Ireland from a prolonged trip to the US for an exhibition of his work that the design became more radical. Seeing a large body of his work for the first time in one space in New York allowed him to explore the designs and consider the influence on his work of the client, the material and his own creative desire. He needed to break away from restrictions and find the essence of the design; to allow his creative energy to achieve what he could not necessarily visualise.

Back in Ireland and once again immersed in the wild coastal nature that surrounded him, one evening when the studio was empty, he began to carve away that which was not needed from a nearly finished chair. This was the true beginning of the Enignum Series and when he returned to the sketches of the table on which he had been working prior to his US trip he used this method to leave a skeleton form. However he quickly realized the impossibility of achieving the full scale piece by this method. This led to bending wood free form and allowing the work to grow as opposed to removing excess from the solid. Thin strips were sliced and manipulated, brought together to support the piece whilst also forming the previously sketched sinuous shapes.

The rapport which Joseph has developed with his chosen material is evident from its initial selection, through the conversation which follows to the final communication of his original concept.
