Kjaerholm PK-12 Chair

Designed by Paul Kjaerholm (1922-1980) Denmark

1964

Manufactured by E. Kold Christensen
Stamped "DENMARK''

An armchair which combines the legs and backrest in a pair of long stainless steel structures with a canvas sewn seat

width 62.5 cm depth 48 cm height 67 cm (24.5 x 19 x 26.5 ins)

A graduate of the Copenhagen School of Arts & Crafts, Kjaerholm is a key figure in Scandinavian mid-century modern design. He was a lecturer at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts and Professor at the Institute for Design in 1976.

The apparent simplicity of the design of the PK-12 relied on precise engineering and was extremely expensive to make; fewer than 60 were ever ordered and the neutral fabric covered seat of this example is very rare. In this chair Kjaerholm has bridged the chasm between 19th century aesthetics and 20th century industrial form, creating a piece of furniture which transcends time. In the PK12 there are no loose ends; the material is stretched to its utmost creating beauty in its proportions and yet renouncing the superfluous. Kjaerholm's furniture harks back to a Danish tradition where craftsmanlike integrity and love of the material take centre stage. These chairs exude craftsmanship and simplicity and are masterpieces of international design.

Kjaerholm's work is represented at:
The Museum of Modern Art, New York
Victoria & Albert Museum, London
