Gerald Summers CB Desk or Dining Chair
Designed 1933 by Gerald Summers (1899-1967)
Made by 'Makers of Simple Furniture' (1931-1940)
Gerald Summers was the most innovative British Modernist designer and in only ten years produced over a hundred furniture designs which capture the zeitgeist of the 1930's. The CB chair was an early 1930's design for a dining and desk chair; please note the contemporary image which was taken from a hand-typed advertising sheet provided by the Summers family.
The sides of the chair including the inward swept legs are cut from a single sheet of plywood and the gently sloping back has a rounded top edge making this an extremely comfortable and practical design. The chair originally had a white finish and the chair was offered with lining material or the client's own fabric.
Originally offered through Heals and Harrods and select department stores in the US including Pembertons in New York, examples of Gerald Summers' designs are now held by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.
