Pair of Japanese Yarisaya

Japan

Horse Hair (left) measurements: height 37 cm width 20 cm (14.75 x 8 in)

Bear Fur (right) measurements: height 36 cm width 23 cm (14.25 x 9.25 in)

The Yari is a spear which, due to its very long length was also used as a standard in ceremonial processions. The blade of the spear would be encased in a shaped cover, a yarisaya, of thick bear or horsehair which when carried in a group high in the air above the samurai would have looked very striking.

This shape is Jumonji (cross shaped) and each is formed over a lacquered base. The tightly textured yari to the right is of bear fur and that on the left is of horse hair.
