Anglo-Indian Sadeli Inlaid Box
1860 to 1880
Width 22.5cm Depth 17.5 cm Height 6cm (9 x 7 x 2.5 in)
This elegant box was made in Bombay Province, a part of British India, in the latter half of the 19th century. The interior is of sandalwood and the exterior is covered entirely with ivory, ebony and sadeli inlay in a repeating pattern of circles giving it a very contemporary appearance.
The circular sadeli inlay is of wood, green stained ivory and white metal and to the edges and sides are further bands of sadeli inlay borderd by ivory. The unusual inset hinged lid is lifted with a tiny silver ring and the box rests on four delicate little ivory feet.
