EnquireA Southern Indian 19th Century Peacock
Height 17 cm width 27 cm depth 11 cm ( 6.75 x 10.75 x 4.5 in )
This bird stands proud with its head held high and its long feathered tail outstretched; simple herringbone detailing are enough to convince us of the glory of his forthcoming display.
Cast in brass he has no openings or attachments to suggest function so he may have been a finial or element from a shrine as the peacock plays an important role in both Hindu iconography and in Buddhism. He was the vehicle of Subrahmanya, son of Siva, of Saraswati the consort of Brahma and goddess of wisdom, arts and music and in Buddhism peacocks feature in several of the jatakas, the previous incarnations of Buddha.
