JAPANESE SPHERICAL YARI-SAYA

Late Edo Period (1603 - 1868)

Height 33 cm diameter 24 cm ( 13 x 9.5 in )

The spear cover has a spherical body with a flared foot and neck, each tied with rope-twist lacquer bands; the underside is also of gold lacquer.

The Yari is a spear which, due to its very long length was also used as a standard in ceremonial processions. The blade of the spear would be encased in a shaped cover, a yari-saya, of thick bear or horsehair or lacquer which when carried in a group high in the air above the samurai would have looked very dramatic.
