EnquireJAPANESE TRIPPLE HEADED SPEAR YARI-SAYA
Late Edo Period (1603 - 1868)
Height 45cm diameter 42 cm ( 17.75 x 16.75 )
The large and very compact black bear hair yari-saya is in the form of a triple headed spear
The Yari is a spear which, due to its very long length was also used as a standard in ceremonial processions. The blade of the spear would be encased in a shaped cover, a yari-saya, of thick bear or horsehair or lacquer which when carried in a group high in the air above the samurai would have looked very dramatic.
