JAPANESE YARI-SAYA SHAPED AS A PARASOL

Late Edo Period (1603 - 1868)

Height 29.8 cm diameter 25 cm ( 11.75 x 10 in )

The yari-saya is of black lacquer with a silver lacquer band and the underside and parasol ribs are of gold lacquer.

The Yari is a spear which, due to its very long length was also used as a standard in ceremonial processions. The blade of the spear would be encased in a shaped cover, a yarisaya, which when carried in a group high in the air above the samurai would have looked very striking.

Two Yarisaya were exhibited at the Quai Branly exhibition in Paris November 2011 to January 2012 and at the Musee de la Civilisation, Quebec, Canada April 2012 to January 2013
