COLLECTION OF 95 YARI SAYA

From the private collection of Mr. Ide Masanobu and published in the book of his collection in 1996

Japan Edo Period (1615 - 1868)
Meiji Period (1868 - 1912)

Materials: Wood, copper, iron, lacquer, leather, horse hair, silk, wool, gold and silver

Mr. Masanobu continued to collect Yari saya and this collection now numbers 95 of which 82 are published in this book.

The Yari is a spear which, due to its very long length was also used as a standard in ceremonial processions. The blade of the spear would be encased in a shaped cover, a yari-saya, of thick bear or horsehair or lacquer which when carried in a group high in the air above the samurai would have looked very dramatic.
