A Nest of Peruvian Beakers
Bolivia or Alto Peru
18th Century
Made by the Jesuit Missions of Moxos and Chiquitos
These Spanish missions (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site), founded in the 17th and 18th centuries, were largely autonomous and had thriving economies. A distinguishing feature of the mission buildings themselves and the works of art produced by them is the fusion of the native American Indian and the European cultural influences. This is clearly seen in these nesting hardwood beakers in the style of early European bronze measures or weights with exteriors carved with local flora and fauna.
