Zinc alloy inlaid with silver
The zinc is engraved with designs into which the thin silver is beaten. The base metal is then blackened with a paste of mineral salts resulting in the contrasting finish.

This uniquely Indian metalwork technique takes its name from its place of origin, Bidiri and dates to the second half of the 16th century (a pandan or box of this date is held in the Metropolitan Museum Collections). It became increasingly popular in the west following its appearance at the Great Exhibition, London 1851. The traditional skills and eastern origin appealed to the growing Arts and Crafts movement
