Seahorse Grotto Suite
A Venetian Suite attributed to Pauly & Co.
2nd half of the 19th century
A pair of Venetian grotto armchairs carved in wood, gessoed and silvered. The seat in the form of a scallop shell and the back supported by a seahorse with the arms in the shape of sea serpents.
During the 1880's Signor Pauly, a renowned master craftsman with a consuming passion for all things shell-related, set to work. He carefully observed and sketched in meticulous detail every aspect of marine life and inspired by the colours and contours and with characteristic Italian flair, he immortalised these forms in lavishly carved and gilded wood creating sublime suites of irridescent furniture. His pieces incorporate splended mythical sea creatures entwined with living coral, adorned with starfish, crabs, shells and seahorses; fantasy and reality combining to create an exotic magical underwater world as visually exciting and sumptuous as the Royal palaces they would grace.
