A Burmese Ceremonial Woman's Hatï
Inle Lake Area, Shan District, Mianmar
Late 19th Century
Measurements: Diameter 60 cm (23.5 in)
This ceremonial hat has been intricately constructed in two sections from rattan, a type of palm which is native to tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australasia.
The traditional wide conical hat worn to protect from both sun and rain is here further embellished with fine twisted metal wires which have been individually sewn down the length of the overlapped leaves.
The unusual conical crown is also decorated with rings of the fine wire and leaf motifs topped with sequin flowers. To the underside the hat is decorated with strips of coloured rattan and fabric and sewn with coloured thread and sequins.
