Silver Neck Rings from The Golden Triangle

Circa 1900

Measurements: 21 cm x 19 cm (8.5 x 7.5 in)

Mounted Width 26 cm Height 27.5 cm Depth 9 cm (10.25 x 11 x 3.75 in)

These neck rings are worn by both men and women of the Hmong tribe (also called Meo) who, although originally from areas around the Yellow River in China are also found in the mountainous areas of North Thailand, Burma and Laos which is known as the Golden Triangle. Each ring terminates with engraved wings.

Silver is highly prized among all the tribes of these areas and is thought to protect against illness and misfortune. They believe that illness is a sign that the soul wishes to leave the body and that the wearing of silver jewellery will ensure that the soul stays within the body. The wearing of large amounts of silver also gives a family prestige and wealth is measured in silver.

The marks on the silver can represent the maker, the town in which it was made or the name of the owner.
