These delicate traditional hats called songkok were woven by the Makassarese people from palm and other vegetable fibres and were worn by men.
During the 20th century the use of this early form of hat declined and was replaced by a black felt, cotton or velvet hat called the peci which, after Independence in 1945, was widely adopted as a symbol of freedom; it was worn by Indonesia's first President, Sukarno, who had fought for Indonesian independence from the Dutch.
