English
Circa 1770
This rare pair of paktong candlesticks were made in China for the British market
Each has a stepped beaded square base and tall cluster column stems terminating in Corinthian capitals.
Paktong originated in China and is an alloy of copper ores with nickel and zinc, hence the Chinese name translated means 'white copper'. It was imported by English makers such as Matthew Boulton who were appreciative of its potential for such items as candlesticks as the metal could be cast, took a high polish and was slow to tarnish.
Most surviving paktong is from 1760-1780 as it died out as a high fashion statement of the wealthy by the late 18th century.
