Spanish Polychrome Figure
Probably Granada, Spain
Circa 1700
This large polychrome sculpture is of a titled donor figure, a benefactor to the local community, probably a Contessa. She is portrayed kneeling on a cushion with her hands held in prayer and would have been placed in the Church to show her continuing piety. The figure is wearing a black-work chemise under a silk damask brocaded gown decorated with stylised carnations.
