This entrancing scene of Orpheus charming the animals with his music is based on the myth from Ovid's 'Metamorphosis'. He is seen seated in a glade dressed in classical drapery with a laurel wreath on his head holding an early representation of a modern violin and surrounded by domestic, forest, exotic and mythological beasts.
